Alaska Winter Travel | Things To Know

When planning your Alaska Winter travel vacation, there are lots of factors to consider. Where to fly into? What cities to visit? Are roads accessible and safe? These are all normal and necessary things to consider and plan for. Below are some local tips to take into consideration.

Alaska Flight Planning

There are two major cities in which you can fly into commercially- Anchorage and Fairbanks. From here, you can rent a vehicle to travel around or hop on a Ravn Air flight to smaller towns you wish to visit! Our recommendation would be to rent a vehicle and make the drive. By doing so, this allows you to explore local areas that flights cannot venture to. Additionally, this option gives you flexibility to explore more once you arrive at your destination.

Winter Cities to Visit in Alaska

Skiing and Snowboarding: Anchorage and Girdwood

Northern Lights: Fairbanks (most popular), Anchorage, Girdwood, Homer and Seward

Alaska Winter Road Conditions

While roads in the Winter can definitely be snowy and icy, rest assured they are well maintained! We are used to Winter conditions and the safety of all travelers is essential. We always recommend driving cautiously, as wildlife is still a large factor that cannot be controlled. If you are not used to Winter driving conditions, it’s best to ensure you take your time while exploring by planning for extra time to travel to and from activities. Lastly, you want to make sure the vehicle you rent is properly fitted for Winter driving with appropriate tires, proper fluids, and clean exterior lights.

Getting outdoors and exploring is what Alaska is all about in the Winter! If this suits your adventure style, then Alaska Winter travel is a great option to explore!
