Every year, as winter nears, we are preparing for our season of Homer winter king salmon fishing and crabbing! It’s our family’s favorite time of year to start the stock pile of salmon and crabs for our upcoming dinners. Additionally, it’s one of the best ways to keep us outdoors during the cold season- which is important for us Alaskans! When the days seem shorter, nothing beats an easy dinner that you and family can enjoy. Which makes this Easy Homemade Crab Cake Balls Recipe our family’s go-to for the long nights ahead!
This recipe calls for tanner crabs, as this is what is in season for us! We prefer tanners, as they are sweeter tasting, but any crab you have on hand will be perfect!
Recipe makes: 4 hearty servings | Prep Time: 15-20 min | Cook Time: 3-5 min
- 2/3 cups panko (or you can use ritz crackers)
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley (dried parsley works just fine too)
- 1 tbsp finely chopped green onions
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp old bay seasoning
- 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 egg lightly beaten
- pinch of salt and pepper
- 8 oz of crab meat
- 1 tbsp of oil for frying (we love using coconut oil for this)
Signature Garlic Aioli Ingredients:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp garlic
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2-1 tbsp lemon zest
- pinch of salt and pepper to taste
- Grab a large mixing bowl and mix together: 1/3 of your panko and all ingredients (except the crab!)
- Slowly mix in crab cakes, using hands, until blended. After mixing, you can put in the fridge for an hour to help firm up the mixture to make it easy for crafting the balls!
- Pour the remaining panko into a separate bowl.
- Once mixture is ready to go, scoop some out and roll into ball size. Roll the ball around and coat in the the remaining panko.
- Heat up the oil in a frying pan or in a fryer.
- Place balls in the pan or fryer and cook until golden brown. I recommend rolling all your balls and then fry, as they fry up pretty fast!
- While balls are frying, put all ingredients for the aioli in a blender or food processor and blend up! You can also hand mix if you would like as well. If you like it a little spicy, add a dash of sriracha!
- I like to make the crab mixture in the am and refrigerate during the day until it’s time to cook up.
- If you don’t have crab, you can use any fish on hand for this recipe too!
- Don’t forget to let the kiddos help! This is a fun, hands on recipe for them to try.
- You can also flatten these balls into cakes, if you prefer!
